A week later, Jan woke me up to say her water broke. I knew what it meant, but was never sure exactly what it was and frankly, being a male, I didn’t want to know. TMI is the watch word in this case.

I was used to the arrival of my kids by now, so I wasn’t freaking out. I woke the rest of the ladies, and they all headed for the bedroom. The front door opened and Old Woman came in, followed by Shiloh. I grabbed a bottle of brandy and headed for the porch, where Charley was already building a small fire. We sat quietly sipping brandy. Time seemed to stretch out, and then it was ‘time’. They sent Sara to get me. She was looking a bit pale, and I think right then she was rethinking the whole motherhood thing.

I almost didn’t make it to the birth. When he decided to come out, he did so with a will. One second he wasn’t there and the next he was, and he let us know. His first breath seemed to go on and on, and then he bellered like a gut-shot Cape Buffalo (or what I thought one would sound like). I figured he woke the entire canyon.

The ladies were dealing with him while I knelt by the bed and hugged Jan. She smiled and said, “I don’t think I want to do this again!” I agreed. We have enough witches, and kids, but she was smiling when they brought the baby to her. They were all saying how beautiful he was. I thought he looked like a wrinkled pink prune, but was smart enough to keep my mouth shut. I guess you gotta be a woman to see beauty in all things.

And I swear he was glaring at me like it was all my fault (which it was, more or less). Jan offered him a nipple and, being my son, he grabbed onto that and wasn’t about to let it go. He had found a wonderful new toy!

We all decided that morning could wait. Things went so fast, we simply went back to bed. The boy was sound asleep, full belly and nursing is hard work. I held Jan who held our son. It was a new day and I was soon running off to god knows what…again.

The next week was spent planning our route further. As for fuel, we had fuel dumps hidden all along the route as far as Nebraska, where we would turn north and follow an easterly route. All was ready, and I was just spending all the time I could with my family.

My new son was no longer a pink prune. His eyes were blue and lively, and I think he was over hating me, since he seemed to enjoy it when I held him. The other two boys were impressed for about ten minutes and then headed off on important boy stuff. It was nice just staying home and enjoying it. My girls? The older ones were part boy- off and running, involved in roughhouse stuff.
